All Natural Homemade Carpet Freshener

Carpet (especially older carpet) is notorious for holding on to all kinds of odors that make their way into your home. You’re probably familiar with the scenario of laying on your carpet and suddenly noticing a musty smell.  It makes you want to jump and grab some freshening spray right then and there.  Never mind if you have kids or pets and you’re constantly down on the floor in close proximity to the odors your carpet can release.

Carpeting is one of the many things in our homes that holds on to moisture.  This moisture retention is what makes the odors in the carpet seem much more pungent.  The more humid your indoor environment, the more you will notice those old-carpet-smells.

So what do you do to keep those odors at bay and refresh your carpet? You might grab a bottle of spray or powder freshener from the store.

But do you really know what’s in those bottles?

While these bottles won’t necessarily list out their toxic ingredients, we know from research that they are filled with added fragrances and allergen-inducing chemicals.  In actuality, the carpet fresheners you purchase at the store are FILLED with toxins that just mask bad odors.  These fragrances and chemicals (like benzoyl benzoate, sodium silicoaluminate and sodium sulfate) trigger an allergic response from many adults, not to mention the children and pets that are in close proximity to the carpet it is used on.

The best alternative for your health and for actually REMOVING the odors, is to make your own carpet freshener.

Most likely you will have almost everything you need already right in your kitchen to get started.

Homemade Non-Toxic Carpet Freshener

  • ½ cup Baking Soda
  • 30 Drops Essential Oils (favorites include: LAVENDER OIL as a natural disinfectant, PEPPERMINT OIL as a natural bug repellant,  WILD ORANGE will repel fleas)
  • Container with a shaker top

Measure Baking Soda into your container and add your essential oil drops.  Mix together with a table knife until fully mixed.

How to Use:

Lightly sprinkle on your carpet and let the mixture sit for 10 – 15 minutes in order to absorb the odors.  Vacuum your carpet when finished.

And as a bonus, wherever you store your mixture (in a closet, under the sink), you will absorb odors there as well.
