7 Morning Drinks to Add to Your Routine That Aren’t Coffee!

Confession: I absolutely love the mornings. It’s a perfect time to take it slow and do something for yourself before the madness of the day hits. I try to spend most of my mornings without social media, email or TV and instead opt for sitting in silence, meditating or reading an article I’ve saved during my internet browsing from the day prior.

With my morning routine always comes a tasty beverage and since I quit coffee I’ve explored many options to take its place. There is just something about slowly sipping out of a mug, curled up on the couch, that brings a relaxed state of mind. The beverage I choose is always lead by water. Water is so important first thing in the morning because you haven’t been hydrating your body since the night prior. Before I even sit down to eat I try to drink about 4 ounces of water to give my body a nice, refreshing jolt.

Check out these 4 ways to start consuming more water right away!

Accompanied by the water is always one of these beverages! Try them out, swap them out during different days of the week, your mood, or your lifestyle at any given time. The possibilities are endless!

Warm lemon water– the holy grail for digestion, this combination is great for soothing your digestive tract and providing a bit of vitamin C to your body. Vitamin C is great for your immune system but also your adrenal glands. Our adrenals are responsible for balancing our blood sugar and hormones making it essential that we provide it with strong care in today’s stressful world. Plus, the lemon is great for detoxing the system so you really get so much bang for your buck with this one and it’s so quick and easy to make!

Matcha latte– okay, okay so I may be biased because if you read my bio you know this is hands down my favorite drink, I seriously cannot get enough! Ensuring you purchase matcha from a quality source (no concentrates, added sugars, etc.) this green powder provides some serious energy without the jitters, anxiety or brain fog of coffee. I love drinking it an hour or so before my workout for a little boost of motivation. It also has antioxidants which are great for our overall health. I like that you can enjoy matcha hot or iced, providing the same variety as coffee.

Reishi mushroom coffee– When I first purchased mushroom coffee the label said, ‘like liquid yoga’. I laughed at the joke but found it to be surprisingly accurate. If you lean towards being a high strung, tense person this coffee alternative will have you feeling more Zen than Buddha himself! I was amazed by the relaxing benefits and continue to use this whenever times feel a bit stressful. The relaxation properties are available in reishi because it is an adaptogenic, which means it helps the body deal with the negative impacts of stress naturally. This is great for balancing your hormones, keeping everything in sync.

Dandelion coffee– Although I don’t drink coffee I think most of us can agree there is just something about that cup of joe that warms the soul. With Dandelion coffee I feel like I can still get the same feeling but with added health benefits and no jitters or anxiety. Dandelion coffee is great for liver support, provides us with vitamins and minerals like B’s, zinc and potassium and you only need 1 teaspoon! It also tastes the most similar to coffee if you’re really hung up on coffee’s taste.

Turmeric Tea– turmeric has amazing anti inflammatory properties and it’s said to be outstanding for your digestive system. Try it with full fat coconut milk to keep you feeling fuller longer. I love the warming effect the beverage has on the whole body and the hint of spice it provides. This makes for a great nightcap beverage too!

Bone Broth– Our ancestors made use of every piece of the animals they consumed including the bones! Bone broth is so easy to make and is nourishing for your entire body. It provides essential minerals for proper balance and helps build collagen which is great for your hair, skin, nails and joints. The greatest role of bone broth however is its ability to heal and seal the intestinal lining. In doing this, the broth helps protect us from many inflammatory diseases and food allergies. I love blending mine with some sea salt and grass fed butter for an added nutritional punch!

Apple Cider Vinegar shots– Your first instinct is probably a scrunched up face with a look of utter disgust. I am telling you ACV shots are so powerful and amazing! Like lemon water they stimulate the digestive tract but provide an added benefit of also increasing your stomach acid. Stomach acid is essential for proper digestion and absorption of all the nutrients we eat. You can have a squeaky clean diet but if you aren’t absorbing it then you’re receiving little to no health benefits. Start small with 1-2 teaspoon and work up to 1 Tablespoon. You can add some honey, red pepper, ginger or a splash of any other fresh fruit juice for some added flavor.

How do you start your morning? What’s your favorite beverage to start the day? I’d love to hear!
